Faculty of Arts School of Social and Environmental Enquiry

Welcome to The School of Social and Environmental Enquiry

About Us

The School of Social and Environmental Enquiry was formed in 2007 from the School of Anthropology, Geography and Environmental Studies (SAGES), Social Theory, Gender Studies and a majority of staff from the Department of History and Philosophy of Science.

As a broadly interdisciplinary School, SSEE offers students the opportunity to experience the way in which quite different approaches can be brought to bear productively on the great social and environmental challenges that we face today. Actively involved in research on natural systems, sustainability, migration, human rights, gender issues, development, globalisation, cross-cultural knowledge and practice, the application of scientific and medical knowledges, (to name but a few) SSEE staff will introduce you to theories and methods with which to critically engage the world. SSEE not only fosters such an engagement but also offers its students the opportunities to be involved in the transfer of knowledge within and between communities. Many of our subjects offer field based learning experiences and at post graduate level, internships which provide opportunities for career development. The School’s unique combination of constituent disciplines fosters the bridging of traditional boundaries between the Sciences and Humanities providing a vigorous intellectual basis on which to develop the potential to make a difference.
